We are in Kuala Lumpur now, we got off the overnight train at about 7:30 am well rested and ready to rock. We migrated to the closest thing to our comfort zone to eat our breakie, Starbucks (sad I know).
Before heading out to try to find the hostel we all had to use the washroom, let me just point out that they're getting worse and worse. I guess we will just have to get out of our comfort zones sooner rather than later.
After getting off the monorails we walked to our hostel, passing lots of people on the street trying to sell us selfie sticks? THEYRE EVERYWHERE! Were the weird ones now because we don't have one! I have to admit they're pretty handy for being on a trip when you don't want or don't have anyone to take the picture for us! I can't believe I'm saying this but I might just get one... Oh god.
Once at the hostel it was still way too early since check in is only at 2pm so get locked up out bags and went for a walk in town. We went to grab some food and to find Veronica some shoes since she didn't listen to me and opt out of bringing some. I tried something new today, its called bubble tea, got it without the milk of course, its odd but pretty good and kills two birds with one stone! You get a drink and you get to eat the tapioca pearls.
When 2:30pm rolled around we figured we should go check in and get settled into our new home for the next few days. The hostel is awesome and clean, the bunks are better than the last and the pillows are fluffier! Life is good over here in Malaysia:). We met another Canadian that was staying in our room, her name was Katie and she's from Winterpeg and has been traveling for 2 years! After speaking to her for a while and getting some good insights, Marleigh was tired so she took a nap and Vee and I decided to go for another walk.
We've been on the lookout for cheapie sunglasses to travel with and haven't had any luck. We were walking and saw some cool looking ones in a little stall so we stopped to have a look. By stopped I meant harassed to stop by Indian men that try to reel you in by saying that were pretty. Anyway we had a look and found some decent ones, so we ask how much.
Us: how much are these
Man: you tell me price
Us: well I don't know just tell us how much
Man: RM90 (30 Canadian dollars each for fake cheap ass raybans and superdrys)
Us: pfft no way
Man: ok you tell me price
Us: RM30 (10 CAD)
He got offended after this and kept trying to get us to pay way too much, this went on for wayyyy too long.
So we decided to just forget it and we told him nvm but nope he wouldn't let us leave! Great were trapped in a corner by a fat Indian guy. Fuck sakes these dudes are relentless. After 20 minutes of arguing with this guy we finally broke him down and he gave us both pairs for RM50 (about 17 CAD) so he started at wanting to charge us 60 bucks and settled at 17... Wtf.
Following this torturous bargaining we went back to get Mar at the hostel. We all went to a street where there's a lot of different food and stalls. There's was way too many funky smells and every 2 seconds you hear: yes miss, you want blah blah blah blah blah...( they walk around with their food menus and blurt out everything on it to you super fucking fast no matter if you want to hear it of not). My thought: dude get OUT of my space lol.
We left this place, grabbed some fruit for the morning and went to have a few drinks at a bar then headed back to go to bed.
Culture shock settling in well...so glad!
A bientot,
Janelle Brine
